I couldn't believe it when I saw it in my Gmail inbox.
"John C Maxwell is now following you on Twitter!"
How stinking cools it that! I mean this is the John Maxwell. The brilliant author of more leadership books than all retired militay generals put together. A world renown speaker and Pastor. Not to mention I'm pretty sure that he dreams in catchy phrases that he then shares in his book like "Never tear down a fence until you know why it was built." Brilliant.
I think this is pretty cool to have someone like him following someone like me as I fuddle through my life. He crafts inspiring phrases that propel important leaders and I spit out bits of randomness like "Aniston just peed on me.", but sure enough he chose to follow me.
It must have been my True Confessions of a First Time Dad series I've been blogging about...that has to be how he heard about me :), but frankly I don't care how it happened...he is following me.
Now before you think I've dove off the reality bus head first, I know that Mr. Maxwell has no idea who I am. I'm pretty sure he has a staff person devoted just to filtering his Twitter account on a daily basis and that some staffer copies and pastes those amazing phrases into his Twitter feed from the stack of John Maxwell books by his night stand. But even knowing that I still think it's cool.
Now...
How would we react if in our e-mail inbox today we got a message that said "@jesuschrist is now following you!"
Let that sink in for second.
Would we approach today differently knowing the Creator of the universe, the second member of the Trinity, the Son of Man, the Son of God was following what you did in this life?
Now, what if I told you that this has been happening since before you were born?
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. - Psalm 139:13
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. - Ephesians 1:4
That's right, Jesus is actively watching you every second of the day.
Now fight the urge to think of this as a "big brother" type of "watching". You know the kind that is filled with judgment or that He is expectating us to screw up so He can go tell Dad. Rather consider that Jesus is eagerly cheering you on and wants to see you do good!
To even further blow your mind, He isn't alone in the cheering section!
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith... - Hebrews 12:1-2
The writer of Hebrews is actually tellings us that @everyoneinheaven is now following you too! And believe me that is a way better entourage than even the Jonas Brothers.
So live today as if Jesus was following you. Let yourself feel encouraged that He is urging you on, encouraging you, and desires you to do well for His namesake in this lifetime.
You bet I'm hoping John Maxwell reads this, but what I really hope is that this brings glory to Jesus and that He pleased with the way I live my life.
I want to live a life worth following.
