I think every breathing male on the planet can agree with that statement.
That's why it has to be tough to be a woman...being right all the time must be hard to do. :)
Seriously though, we all deep down have a desire to be right. Whether it is knowing the temperature for the next day, giving the right directions to the pizza joint, knowing the home record of the White Sox against left handed pitchers with good change-ups, or even feeling we have the best answer to any and all people's problems, we love to be the ones that are right.
I am sooooo wired this way.
However, I am sooooooo wrong more times than I'm right and it really bugs me. I'll even go so far as to justify my wrongness in the hope that I can somehow make it seem right. A few of you are shaking your heads in agreement with me. Ha! That's funny.
In my quiet time today I was walking through Psalm 119 and I came across this verse.
"I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes." - Psalm 119:59
A few things jumped out at me.
- "I have considered my ways..." - To do this, I have to first stop and actually think about what my ways are. Too often we just "do our thing" or live by the excuse "that's just the way I am" and never think about why we do what we do. We have to start by being honest with who we really are.
- "...and..." - this little word shows action. It's one thing to go to a conference, read a book, talk to a counselor and list out all the stuff you want to change about yourself only to put on the stack of People magazines in your bedroom. It is a whole different thing when you actually list out those things and then do something about it!
- "...have turned my steps..." - here is the action. It is impossible to walk in two directions at once. Even with the invention of 3D TV you still are only able to physically walk or move in one direction. So by saying we have turned our steps, it means we have stopped going one way and have begun going another.
- ..."to your statutes." - A statute is defined as a permanent rule established to govern your internal affairs. The Psalmist is saying he has turned over his statutes and taken up the statutes of God because they are better. The action he has chosen to take is proactive steps under the right direction.
Maybe today we all can start considering the ways we are currently living by. Then for some of you it may be baby step adjustments that are made, but for the rest of us we need to just stop moving all together and regroup. We need an honest assessment of our current path and we then need to consider some new dance steps.
In the end, we will have to say those two ugly phrases "I'm wrong" and "You are right", but listening to that advice will save us a lifetime of struggle and frustration.
Come on...you know I'm right! :)
