Well last days of anything are hard. OK, maybe not the last day of the season for the Cubs...that's called mercy. :)
The camp became a whirlwind of bags, blankets, pillows, shirts, empty bottles, and random sweaty socks. It was clean up day and the last few hours before the campers went home. Many of the kids in classic church camp form, were getting phone numbers, e-mails, addresses, and getting their final hugs. It seemed like the party was coming to an end and you could almost make out the sound of the herd of parents coming to get their little ones.
We gave out awards for our sports and crowned the winning overall Family Team for most scripture memorized in the week. If you were wondering, yes it was our team that won...Team Green (aka Team Wasabi!)...way to go gang! All of the kids sang a little louder for the last worship set and it finally hit me why it was so amazing.
The songs we sang all week were ones that I had sung a million times in some cases, but what I didn't realize was that for these kids it was their first time and...they were singing it in a second language! The chorus of voices that I heard were kids that had learned more English this week and did it by learning scripture and songs about God! How stinking cool is that!
For me though, the best part of the weekend was about to happen. As Chad wound down the worship, he asked all of the kids to come forward that had made a decision for Christ last night. A line of kids stomped up to the stage and stood across the front as applause rained down for them. A native Taiwan man came forward and led them through their profession of Faith as one by one they verbally accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. But it didn't end with a microphone...it ended in a pool!
Yep, it was dunkin' time baby!
And the highlight of my week...two students asked me to dunk them!!!!
Check it out:
Efram
Samuel
When we had our Baptism weekend in November 2009 I was fortunate to dunk over 70 people at the Lockport Campus. If you are reading this from back in Chicago, did you notice
something? At one of the services I wore this very same shirt!!! I LOVE THIS SHIRT!!!!
I had no idea that the kids wanted me to dunk them so I had my jeans, shirt, hat, and shoes all on. When I got the call for dunking, I just dove in. I thought I took off all the major items such as shoes and hat, but forgot about the leather belt. No biggie...I won't need a belt in heaven anyway and that is the business were doing on this day.
This is what this trip was all about...this is what being a Christian is all about...this is what happens when God gets a hold of you and won't let go.
I will be praying for Efram and Samuel to be sure, but I will (and I'd ask you to join me) be praying for the rest of the group too. Their walk will for sure be more difficult than ours, but our end will be same.
But this time we won't need any translators...just Jesus!
